Program Note
Delicately and transparently depicting a wandering woman who’s unable to find a place to settle down, <Blue Cha Cha> is the third film made by Taiwanese film director Wen Tang Cheng. The young woman A Yu has just been released from prison and now works at a bar living with a middle-aged woman named An. She meets a man there and falls in love with him but for him, it’s just a one-night-stand. Heartbroken, she finds a new place to work and there, she moves in with a man who’s attracted to her. However, her love life doesn’t easily see a happy ending. There’s still hurt in her heart and she still hasn’t found a place to settle down. When she cries noisily at one time and becomes all neurotic at other times, the men are perplexed and soon lose their amorous interest in her. While the film excessively shows her mental state, it also follows along quietly in observance. Director Wen Tang Cheng effectively expresses the solitude any modern man can sympathize with and the changes in emotions that are hard to get understanding from others, through the character A Yu. And the inner change which happens by chance. A Yu opens her heart when she meets a theater troupe performing a puppet play at the beach and she starts to shout out with An. It’s a refreshing laugh. The film touches on the communion with the soul that heals the hurt and the closed mind of a woman. Kwon Yong-min
