Program Note
Nine Emotions is growth story of thirteen-year-old girl and at the same time, it is a story of transgender who wants to find his/her sexual orientation. The daughter of a wealthy Hindu family, Swetha one day witnesses shocking sight. Her uncle dresses up like woman and goes out every night. While she is wondering whether she should tell her parents about it, her parents go on trip and the uncle disappears. Swetha decides to find her uncle and bring him home before her parents come back from the trip. The film converges Hindu myth with traditional festival. The mythical world enters the real world as illusionary gods and the unique colors of the film culminate in the Kiivagam Festival, transgender beauty pageant. Real transgenders participated in the festival, combination of documentary reality and traditional Hindu festival. Kiivagam rite of the transgenders to find the power to live as women by marrying Aravan, sacrifice in the myth. The ritual is process of giving tolerance to the Hindu about the third sex. It reminds us material modernization requires spiritual modernization as well. Fast editing effects including jump cuts and fast zooms in brilliant colors point out the most contemporary from the most Songs and dances add to the bright story. (Kang So-won)
