Program Note
Chow Mo Wan, once imnpossibly in love with Li-chun in In the Mood for Love, still has a lot to talk about and still has endless dream. This time, there are more women: Bai Ling who happens to be a prostitute: Wang Jing-wen, daughter of the hotel owner, and Su Li-zhen who lives on gambling. In addition, the other self of his novel falls in love and goes through a separation with an android that resembles Wang Jing-wen. At the same time, Bai Ling, Wang Jing-wen, Su Lİ-zhen, and the android, all resemble a clone of Li-chun. "I realized that day we would be able to meet many Su Li-zhens..." (from Chow Mo Wan′s monologue) Why did he meet and leave many Li-chuns and Su Li-zhens? The answer is in the critical nature of love. Love always incurs misunderstandings and illusions in the human mind. The Chow Mo Wan of the novel believes the reason the android refused his affections is that it is just too tired - because he knows androids respond late when tired. But later, he finds out that the reason for its refusal is because it is already in love with someone else. Hong Kong and Singapore in the late 1960s. The room number is 2046. The train number is 2046. All those times and spaces exist only inside Chow Mo Wan′s consciousness. Director Wong Kar-wai - as if swimming inside Chow Mo Wan′s consciousness- tells a story about the love that exists only in this man′s memory. Outside the conventional narrative style, the director follows a stream of consciousness. That is how 2046 stimulates our sensitivity and consciousness together. (Kim Ji-seok)
