Program Note
Multitude poor people live in and around the Manila Bay breakwater. Two brothers, expelled from their hometown for unknown reasons, drift into the bay and meet a tired prostitute named Paquita. They are all under the watchful eye of David, a former cop and the man in power in town. The film starts very similarly to films by well-known Filipino director Lino Brocka: it′s a story of innocent country boys getting corrupted in the city. But instead of drawing conclusions about the rampant poverty, director Mario O′ Hara zooms in on the surroundings of the each character. The screen images cruelly juxtapose the lives of the poor near the breakwater with the skyscrapers of the city, as people troll around the buildings searching for food. The film frequently digresses from the harsh story and shows the conflicting delight and sadness of children playing at the beach. Very similar to the musical elements of Bollywood cinema, the songs in the film tell stories and open up the interesting margins with familiar melodies. (Kim Young-jin)

Director
Mario O′HARA
Mario O′Hara started his film career doing writing scripts for television and performing in stage plays. He wrote the screenplays for most of Lino Brocka’s early movies. His close association and corroboration with the great Brocka proved advantageous to him, as he went into movie directing with [Moral], his directorial debut in 1976.
