Program Note
ls it possible to turn the cinema clock back to the time before industrialization? That is, to take an artistic medium away from the mass capital and dehumanization and back to the age of innocence. Trial poses the fundamental question of "what is film?" Made by director Ali Martine and his colleagues with only an 8mm camera, this film is literally "100 percent hand-crafted." In contrast to the general way of production and exhibition, Ali Martine and his colleagues aim to create an open method of filmmaking in which everyone, including the villagers, can participate in the production and exhibition process. This film reminds us of the value of innocent passion for filmmaking. (Kim Ji-seok)
