Program Note
This is a documentary that reflects upon life, history and philosophy through cooking. Sato Hatsuye is a Japanese woman born in Shandong, China, who grew up there learning traditional Shandong cooking until she was 23 years old. She moved to Tokyo and has been running a Chinese restaurant there with her husband since. However, ever since the Cultural Revolution destroyed the traditional Chinese cuisine as well as other traditional culture, Hatsuye has been the only person still preserving the tradition. Every year since 1990, the Shandong government has invited her over to give Shandong cuisine classes. She comes into conflict, though, with the residents of Shandong who are already used to a new type of Shandong cuisine. While Shandong chefs insist that changes are inevitable, she insists on sticking to the tradition. Director Lee Ying depicts the conflict objectively, explaining the historical background of the changes in Shandong cuisine. After all, this conflict is not simply an issue of tradition versus innovation but a by-product of the conflicting views of history. Her family does not understand her wish to go back to Shandong either, but their faith in one another remains intact. The film emphasizes faith and love as everlasting values in life. (Kim Ji-seok)
