Program Note
Thirty-five-year-old Zapa is a locksmith in rural Argentina. When his boss asks him to do a job for some special clients, he’s more than willing. They break into a drug store and Zapa cracks the safe. The clients - police officers - arrest Zapa the next day. A policeman uncle makes a deal with his colleagues - they let Zapa go and he promises to disappear. Zapa goes to Buenos Aires and signs up as a police cadet. Long, hard months of training ensue - Zapa’s a good rookie and passes with flying colours. Zapa is now a member of the Bonaerense - the most brutal and corrupt police force in Argentina. Swiftly promoted, he starts working for Superintendent Gallo, and assignments grow increasingly ′unorthodox′. An innocent civilian is killed in a shoot out at the police station. In the following scandal, Gallo is forced to resign. His even more corrupt replacement takes an interest in Zapa...
