Program Note
During a bullfight, a young matador is gored and the bull, Romero, killed. That is the beginning rather than the end of this tale, however, which actually explores what happens to a variety of people all over Europe who receive different parts of the dead beast. The eyes go to a scientist who has been cheating on his pregnant wife, the meat to a mother who is afraid her daughter will discover her long-held secret, the bone to a little girl’s beloved dog, the horns to a taxidermist, and the ears to the young bullfighter struggling for his life. The characters, moving uncomfortably through the film’s widescreen spaces and their unexpectedly intertwined lives, are quirky and intriguing figures who in one way or another must confront themselves via the bull. Behind this modern fable is Spanish folklore which ascribes healing powers to the herb, rosemary. The Spanish word for rosemary is... Romero.
