Program Note
A new film by Ann Hui, Hong Kong’s most renowned New Wave woman director, known for such films as Boat People and Song of the Exile, The original title of this film, Man Forties, suggests that it is a sequel to her earlier 1995 film Summer Snow. The main character, Yui Kwok, is a married high school teacher in his forties, with a child. The happy family encounters a rude awakening when he learns that a student is in love with him. While Yui Kowk resists temptation, his wife, Man Ching, tells him that her old lover has returned. Her lover was their teacher while they attended high school. During that time, Man Ching became pregnant with the teacher’s child and Yui Kwok married her, vowing to be child’s father. The teacher, now old and divorced, is dying. Man Ching tells her husband she would like to be with their old teacher until his death. Yui Kwok tells her to do as she pleases, and he gets seriously involved with his student. Though older, Jacky Cheung and Anita Mui, who star as the couple, are still enchanting, and the film is a reminder of Ann Hui’s growth as a director. (Nam Dong-chul)
