Program Note
Budi and Rosi, who are assigned the important task of hoisting a flag on Monday’s at school, carefully bring the flag home. There is a lot to do; wash the flag, let it dry, and ironing it. The only problem however, is the flag keeps disappearing. The flag goes through a number of ordeals; it gets trashed in a disposal truck, a baby pees on it, and a gangster wears it as his cloak. The boys too go through a lot of trouble recapturing the flag. Just like the boy who had to run through a village and fields to find a friend’s notebook in the Iranian film Where Is the Friend’s Home, the Indonesian boys must also run through the entire neighborhood. Filmed on location with a digital camera and with minimal lighting, the film achieves a realist style, looking much like a documentary film. Though the boys are poor and their lives hard, this is an upbeat and innocent film with the hope for a brighter future for the boys. (Kang So-won)
