Program Note
In 1931, Molly, 14, her sister Daisy, 8, and their cousin Gracie 10, three ‘half-caste’ children from Western Australia, are taken from their parents under government edict and sent to an institution. Here they are subject to physical and emotional abuse as they are taught to forget their families, their culture, and their lives up to that point and reinvent themselves as members of white society. Gracie and Daisy cling to Molly for support, who decides that they need to return to their parents. Molly plans a daring escape and the three girls begin an epic journey back home, travelling 1200 miles on foot with no food or water, navigating by following the fence that had been built across Australia to keep out rabbits. A.O. Neville, the government functionary in charge of Western Australian Aborigines, brings in a veteran tracker to help find them, convinced he’s acting in the girls’ best interest.
