Morvern Callar is the second film from the director of Ratcatcher, and the visually sensual film contains a story that can be interpreted in many different ways. Under the blinking lights of a Christmas tree, a woman can be seen softly caressing a man’s naked body. The man has just killed himself after completing his novel. He also left behind a small amount of money in his bank account. Believing that the novel will lead her to new and exciting places, she erases his name and fills in her own. A publisher comes to visit Morvern, who is spending her holidays under the sun in Spain. The publisher expresses his wish to publish the book, and shows Movern a large amount of money. When the publisher hears that Morvern works at a supermarket, he believes she is working there to get ideas for her next novel. The finesse and expertise of the female director’s portrayal of a dishonest opportunist woman nevertheless does not necessarily reveal the director’s true intentions. For the audiences are given a chance to witness confusion, emptiness, and the world of the female laborer from Northern England. (Kim Sohee)
