Program Note
The Man Without a Past details the misadventures of tired-faced, middle-aged M (Markku Peltola), who, upon arriving in Helsinki, is brutally mugged, taken to hospital and proclaimed dead - but who just as suddenly sits up, strips off his bandages and walks away to start a new life. Jobless, penniless and amnesic, he is taken in by a kind-hearted family living in a container by the docks. From this modest beginning, he slowly starts to reconstruct his life, taking assorted menial jobs and even earning enough to rent his own tiny container, which he cleans and fills with odds and ends. Life takes an upward turn when he meets Irma (long-time Kaurismaki collaborator Kati Outinen), a Salvation Army worker, and the two begin one of those odd and compelling relationships that is a trademark of Kaurismaki’s films. A small story about people who still know how to be gentle. An enormous cinematic experience.

Aki KAURISMAKI
After studying at the University of Tampere, Aki Kaurismäki started his career as a co-director of films with his elder brother Mika Kaurismäki. His debut feature, Crime and Punishment (1983), restaged Dostoyevsky′s Crime and Punishment in modern-day Helsinki. He gained worldwide notice with his movie Leningrad Cowboys Go America. His other films include Shadows in Paradise, Ariel, and The Match Factory Girl.
