Program Note
This is the second film directed by Hiroshi Shimizu, who had worked as Takeshi Kitano’s assistant director. The film comically depicts the lives of three underdogs. Iwano, in his twenties, stops boxing and lives as a ‘human punching bag.’ For the price of 2000 yen for 2 minutes, he offers himself as a punching bag to the salary men who are heading home after work. Maru, a single man in his thirties, works at a family-run hat store, but there are rarely customers. Most of the time he just sits around idle. Sada, in his fifties, lives by handing out leaflets. He does not take his job seriously, and lives his life as he pleases. One day, small changes occur: Maru gets hired as a wig salesman. Sada starts to rebuild a boat, planning on a trip, and Iwano heads for the gym. Is there hope for these men? The three cowards face ordeals and experience hardship in trying to succeed within the competitive society. (Nam Dong-chul)
