Program Note
From 1997 to 2000, between the first and second stages of the intifada, relative calm reigned on the Palestinian-Israeli border. Focusing on seven Israeli and Palestinian children, the filmmakers demonstrate just how divided the lives of neighbors can be: they live in immediate proximity but only touch each other indirectly through border barricades and violent street fighting. Rather than focusing on hard news and political events, Promises draws viewers into the hearts and minds of Jerusalem′s children, giving voice to those captured by the region′s hatreds as well as those able to transcend them. Living no more than 20 minutes apart, but locked in separate worlds, these Palestinian and Israeli children offer insight into issues at the heart of the conflict.
Director
B.Z. Goldburg
B. Z. Goldberg was born in Boston but grew up near Jerusalem. He studied film at New York University, and then worked as a journalist during the first Palestinian intifada. He has also worked as a specialist solving international conflicts.
Justine Shapiro
Justine Shapiro was born in South Africa and grew up in Berkeley, California. She studied theater and history at
Tufts University. Shapiro has worked for fifteen years as an actress in film, television and the theatre. Since 1994 she has been hosting and co-writing award-winning the adventure-travel series Lonely Planet. Promises is her first full-length documentary.
Carlos Bolado
Carlos BOLADO ′ s His directorial feature debut, Under California, The Limit of Time (1999), was selected for film festivals
worldwide. Bolado received international recognition for editing the films, Like Water for Chocolate (1991) and Like a Bride (1993).
