Program Note
The success of a documentary lies in the choices made about what and when to record, and how to present this one screen. A few years ago, the Asahara Shoko incident shocked Japan. The incident involved the collective action of young cult members of the Aum Shinrikyo (a religious cult). The Japanese people were glued to news reports of poison gas attacks, kidnapping, murder, and illegal weapons manufacturing. However, the Japanese media failed to investigate the actual members of the Aum Shinrikyo and what made them carry out these actions. The documentary A focuses on the people behind these acts. In spite of public criticism as cult sympathizers, Director Mori and Producer Yusuoka record undauntingly from the perspective of the cult members. A scene depicting the violent interrogation of innocent cult members shows the common injustices of Japanese society from the perspective of the cult members. Moreover, the Aum shinrikyo members appear as common people we see around us in this documentary. A is no a documentation of the past but is about the present. It reveals the injustices prevalent in Japanese society and in the end, leaves us wondering about the Aum Shinrikyo members now. (Yang Shion)
