Program Note
Marat is a personal driver in Almaty, capital of Kazakhstan. When he hits a Mercedes, the nightmare begins. The loan he gets to pay for damages puts him at the mercy of a Mafia boss. Marat becomes the victim of daily humiliation with events spinning out of his control. He is forced to consider a contract: The release of his debts in exchange for the murder of a bothersome journalist.
Director
Darezhan Omirbaev
Born in 1958 in the village of Uyuk, Kazakhstan. He was a critic for the magazine New Film, and eventually an editor at the Kazakh Film Studio. In 1991, he made his first feature Kairat. His second feature Cardiogram (1995) was selected for official competition at the Venice Film Festival, and his third feature Killer (1998) was invited to Cannes.
