Nine-year-old Hava is told that she is not allowed to go outside or hang out with boys now that she is a woman. Without understanding what it means, Hava enjoys the final days of her childhood measuring the shadows that surround and move around her life. The parameters of life allowed for women in Iranian society are narrowly constrained, but that doesn’t mean the women stop there. The stories of Ahoo and Hoora are about women who escape from social constraints. Among the women in chadors who ride bicycles and race along the road is Ahoo. In her old age, Hoora purchases expensive furniture and appliances that she never had before, loads them on a raft, and sets out on a voyage. By weaving the lives of these three women in a single trajectory, the film presents an aesthetic portrayal of the restrictions in the women’s lives and their escapes. (HONG Soin)
