Program Note
An animation about the contemporary history of Latvia told through the director’s personal memories. A girl, growing up in the Soviet Union, tries to become the best student by obediently following the teachers’ instructions. The television always shows the Soviet military’s feats against German Nazis and Western imperialists; the girl wishes to be a Communist warrior. She doesn’t understand why her grandfather hates Communism. However, she grows distant from Communist ideals as she learns about the experiences of the people she loves. Combining animation with documentary elements, including stock footage and historical figures, My Favorite War shows new territory to explore through experiment and animation. (NAM Dong-chul)
