Program Note
The country’s most revered shamans rush to Mr. Kang’s house to cure his eldest son’s life-threatening illness. Among them, Okhwa, who has extraordinary spiritual powers, discovers a gourd buried in the village. She explains that the soul trapped in the vessel—another villager who had not properly been laid to rest—has somehow been released and that spirit is the very threat that is now endangering the boy’s life. The Hut won I.S.D.A.P. at the Venice Film Festival in 1981.
Director
LEE Doo Yong
Lee debuted with the melodrama The Lost Wedding Veil (1970), but became known for his six taekwondo action films, particularly Manchurian Tiger (1974). His interest in shamanism led to The Early Years (1977), Muldori Village (1979) and The Hut (1980). By the 1980s, he was making some of his best works including The Last Witness (1980), The Trouble-Solving Broker (1981), Mulleya Mulleya (1983), The Oldest Son (1984), and Eunuch (1986).
