Program Note
Director Lee Ji-Sang, who made a croquis-like first film in Yellow Flower(1998), delves into sexual themes once again. Lacking in the energy for formal destructiveness, A Sudden Crash of Thunder
still indulges in a compulsive pursuing of the yellow flower, his cinematic signature, and his use of sex as metaphor, as well as the director′s nihilistic gesture through the use of a pseudo-
documentary storytelling process. Rejecting traditional narratives with the exception of an interview segment, film is full of tenacious, gasping scenes of an anonymous couple engaged in graphic sex.
The explicit nature of these scenes make them difficult to watch, yet they have the power to demystify sex out of its cultural context. For director Lee, sex is a central issue and he uses it
contextually to achieve a ′sudden enlightenment.′ A man left exhausted from uninterrupted sex throws books and his television away as a means of denying the supremacy of contemplative
thoughts. (Ha Seung-Hee)
