Program Note
In the Film In That Country, a cross-section of life in Russia is depicted. The shepherd Nikolai Skuridin is a quiet man who doesn′t dare to talk at home lest he bring on himself the wrath of his wife and mother-in-law. Chapurin, a symbol of authority in the village, betrays them at the same time. And Zaika, the village rascal, is ruining his life and talent. Within the bleak and snowbound landscape, the bonds and rituals connecting the villagers finely portrayed. The most important issue in this film is love for this country and for the poor people who suffer from grief and failure. Lidia Bobrova has said, "Russia looks to me as an iceberg, with Moscow, Petersburg, provincial towns forming the above water part, while the god-forsaken depths of the country make up its underwater bulk. It is there that its real personages are living, and stories are as eternal as life itself with its inevitable need to choose between good and evil, nature itself is a living acting character."
