Wherever you are, McDonald′s and Chinese restaurants are easy to find. While the McDonald′ s hamburgers with its standard taste represents itself as the symbol of food capitalism, Chinese restaurants always serve different tastes and dishes, depending on the country or region. Dishes served in a Chinese restaurant in France, Brazil and the United State are all different. ′Chinese Soup′ in Madagascar cannot be not found anywhere else. Director Cheuk Kwan, a Chinese emigrant to Canada, begins his exploration into the cultural identity of Chinese immigrants through three restaurants in three different countries. It has been said that it was in the 15th century that the Chinese arrived in Madagascar, ahead of the Europeans. The Chinese restaurant in Tamatave city offers excellent Hong Kong cuisine of the highest grade, but the owner has never been to Hong Kong. Migration wisdom which maintains cultural tradition while living among other people of culture is imbued in her cuisine. Another Chinese restaurant in Norway has successfully survives through the challenges of the Caucasian community with a sophisticated Oriental style. The middle-aged couple running the restaurant relates their life filled with exhaustion and loneliness that followed immigration to this far away land, half way around the world. Jim Kok, also known as Loud Jim′ , moved to Canada under a false resident registration, and has lived his whole life nunnine western style restaurant. From Jim, who treats every customer like his own family, the film seeks solutions to the problems inherent in multi-racial and cultural societies. (Nam In-young)
