Program Note
Wushan, in China, is where the world′s largest dam construction project is in progress. The list stage is completed, dividing the region into an old area that will soon be submerged underwater,
and a new area that is packed with high-rise buildings. The director, Zhang Ming who has portrayed extraordinary works set in Wushan, once again visits his hometown during the China′s Lunar New
Year holiday in 2003. Zhang Ming′s small portable DV camera captures the historical moment when thousands of years of a long and ancient history is put underwater, opening a new chapter of history
The way he commemorates this event is by recording the normal daily life of people who seek sex or think about their loved ones at this historical moment. Like the desolated old area run down by
bulldozers, the new area is unsettled as welI. Zhang Ming wanders along the chilly night streets with old friends, and attends a family meeting held in a new apartment. The director′s friends and family
would talk into the camera, or offer a cigarette, sometimes play a card game with it. Like a guest who drops by to participate in such personal gathering, the camera becomes another entity in the
film. A unique piece that reminds us that private matters can be both political and historical. (Nam In-young)
