Program Note
The King Myojang is a violent, belligerent tyrant that destroys neighboring countries. His third daughter, Princess Myosun converts to Buddhism and helps prisoners of war escape. wient told that her ailing father will only live if he eats the eves and the hands of a family member, sne giadly volunteers herself and dies. Myosun is reborn as a goddess of mercy and reaches heaven. Apart from wide-scale battle scenes that can also be seen in The Last Woman of Shang, there are scenes with special effects that depict the many powers of the Buddha. The Goddess of Mercy is an interesting film showing both similarities and differences between Korean and Hong Kong cultures. Both have the same industrial sense to bring Buddhism to commercial films, but different ways of conveying it in their own films. In Hong Kong, the title was The Goddess of Mercy, which emphasized the feminine side; while in Korea, they used The Tyranny, emphasizing the masculine side. Also, the film cast doubles for one role in pursuit of commercial success in each country′s own market; they shot some scenes twice, with Choi Eun-hee of Korea and with Li Lihua of Hong Kong. Both were top-notch actress in each country. The spitting image of each actress indicates the similar tastes of the two country′s movie fans. Unfortunately, a Korean version was lost.
