Program Note
Near the point of death, a resistance soldier tells his wife where some gold is hidden. The wife is sent to a camp for female POWS, where blatant acts of cruelty and sexual abuse are rampant. An escape attempt is made by resistance soldiers in search of the hidden gold. The Bamboo House of Dolls is a typical Kuei Chi-Hung movie, famous for lasciviousness. In the 1970s, when censorship of sexuality and violence was loosened, movies with a strong sense of sexuality started to be made and imported. Drawing a 100,000-strong audience in Korea, Bamboo was a smash hit. Bamboo is an exploitation film of the ′Women in Prison′ variety. It bears the highly sexual marks that are in line with the genre′s iconography, such as the escapees′ wearing micro mini skirts, sporting bouffant hairstyles, leather boots and toting whips. The film, however, turns into a typical Hong Kong action film in its last half, full of fast car chases, gunfights in the mountains, and martial arts confrontations. Korea of the 1970s was an age of suppression. This reckless Hong Kong film of sexuality and violence would be a free region into which Korean moviegoers could escape from reality. (Cho Young-jung)
