"On connait la chanson" is a colloquial French expression which refers to those banal stories that everyone knows. That characters in the story are mediocre Parisians tuned into old songs, yet without any banality of boredom. A man makes eye contact with a woman on a street somewhere in Paris, but this is not just another banal love story. Camille recognizes Nicholas as her sister′s ex - boyfriend who been away from Paris (Camille and Nicholas are played by a married couple and co-writers of this film). Their complicated relationship is part of a theme in which deceptive appearances tangle up human relationships. The cast including Sabine Azema as Camille′s sister, Odile, and Pierre Arditi as Claude, Odile′s husband who is uncomfortable with Nicholas′ return, and Andre Dussolier as Simon who nervously admires Camille-all regulars in Resnais′ films. Although veteran actors, the actors had to learn new skills to lipsync to the chanson playbacks that pop up sporadically throughout the film. On Connait la Chanson is a hilarious auteur film disguised in the musical and comedy genres. (K. Jin Yoon)
