A martial art competition is held and Cho Ji-ho, who has wanted to live a peaceful life, is sent by his former master to learn better skills at the Sang-Moo Martial Academy under the tutelage of a new master and thus participate in the competition. On the other hand, the master of Baek-Seung Martial Academy conspires to have his son win the competition and hires some Japanese killers to kil lJi-ho′s former master. Ji-ho wins the competition not knowing that his former master had been killed and out of spite the Baek-Seung master also kills the Sang-Moo master. Cho Ji-ho is faced with having to confront and take his revenge on Baek-Seung Martial Academy. This is one of Chung Chang-wha′s masterpieces which announced the beginnings of the martial arts genre, and it links Hong Kong′s traditional heroic film genre with modern action. It was Hong Kong′s first film to be exported to the United States in 1973, and became the number one box office hit across the continent. It provided a bridge for Hong Kong martial arts films to venture into the world stage. Based on some breathtaking action sequences, this film stands as one of the best cult films among Hong Kong martial arts films. (Cho Young-jung)
