Program Note
As the last film Chung Chang-wha made in Korea, it shows the most complete Chung Chang-wha style action. This is a story about a cold professional killer who goes back and fortn between the two families who fight over the hidden 108 bars of gold. The coveted gold symbolizes different things for different people such as desire for wealth, power ambition and political revolution. Though the lone swordsman is skeptical about the world which he believes has lost any sense of fairness, he cannot give up his quest for justice. Consequently it is interesting to consider what the gold means to this coldhearted swordsman. Chung creates an excellent action sequence unlike any other directors during that period as the screen composition goes back and forth from long shots to close ups. It is a film with an advanced technique. Without any superfluous story details, through the concise dialogue that sparks between the opponents and the splendidly deadly swordplay, the film embodies modern sophistication. (Cho Young-jung)
