A poignant and touching drama The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Bear is the eighth feature-length animated film by prolific producer and director Danish grand master Jannik Hastrup. In the polar bear′s den which acts as a sanctuary from the ferocity of the arctic north, a pola bear gives birth to a cub. Tragically, the cub is stillborn. The polar bear is grief stricken by this distressing conclusion to her expected happiness, and leaves the safety of her den to la down on the ice to die. To compensate the polar bear′s mate steals a human baby from family that resides nearby. The little boy is raised lovingly by the she bear, and conseguenty the kidnapped boy learns all the skills a polar bear requires to flourish in the world. But the woman who lost her baby boy to the polar bears grieves her missing child deeply and her husband vows to return the boy to her at any cost.

Jannik Hastrup
Hastrup was born in Næstved, Denmark, and has been directing since 1959. He trained under Bent Barfod and Flemming Quist Møller, began making television films in 1967, and has made approximately 60 animations during his career. His animation filmography includes [Concerto Erotico] (with Møller, 1964), [Benny’s Bathtub] (with Møller, 1970), [Trællene] (1974), [Samson & Sally] (1984), [War of the Birds] (1990) as well as the Circleen adventures, of which [Little Big Mouse] is the most recent.
