Program Note
For over 50 years the bellicose relationship between Taiwan and China has been slowly improving, yet always requiring mediation. Isolated between the two countries lies Kinmen Island. Reachable by a 50-minute flight from Taiwan, the island prospers under Taiwanse rule, but stands geographically closer to China. Every night, Chinese can be seen interacting with Taiwanese as they open their doors to a very prosperous black-market. Deals are made where everything is bought and sold, a place where merchants flourish and people flock, demonstrating politicians′ inability and unwillingness to act. A documentary about the island and its black-market, The Kinmenese Track requires an understanding of the complicated history of the two countries. But the Kinmen-born director provides his objective account of the truths that engrossed his hometown, making the film a bit abnormal. An unsteady camera can only offer images taken from the intense reality of the dark black-market, layered to contrast with the clamorous surroundings. Within the darkness of the sescenes is a story worth hearing. (Kang So-won)
