Program Note
Kim Ki-Yooung′s films defined the expressionist tradition of the 60s, a most exceptional trend in Korean cinema. His use of unusual set designs, signifying props, and the perfect manipulation of sound set important precedents. Dong-Shik is a popular music teacher with the factory girls he teachers. He hires one as a maid for his household. He sleeps with her and she becomes pregnant. Dong-Shik and his wife force the maid to have an abortion, which in turn drives her insane, especially after realizing that she wife has had a baby. The film ends with the suicides of Dong-Shik and the maid. Based on actual events, this film served as a metaphor for the impoverished state of society. Also notable are the sophisticated aesthetics, striking black and white cinematography, and a theatrically displayed to cinematic perfection. (Lee Yong-Kwan)e
