Veteran director Cho Moon-Jin confronts the pain of modern Korean history through the story of a dispersed family. In 1980, a North Korean soldier crosses the DMZ to seek his father, becoming wounded and losing his memory in the process. Three old men are identified after an extensive search but their anticipation of meeting a lost son is short-lived, as his sudden appearance creates a stir in their lives. One wonders what can really be blocking their reunion. Until We Meet highlights the tragedy of dispersed families through the transformation of these three characters. The passage of time has changed them, and the primary relation between father and son comes into question. Two candidates, one under constant watch from his new family in the South, and another hiding his past as an ex-communist official who gave up his family up North, avoid the disabled son. Only a ceramist living alone tries to embrace him, remembering the family he left behind. These people reflect a divided generation wandering in agony. Until We Meet makes the audience re-examine the painful history created by the division of Korea. Rather than analyze the characters, the film ebbs compassion while following their actions. Within this lies an understanding that, regardless of who is responsible for the country′s division, ultimately it is up to them to live such a reality. (Cho Young-Jung)
