Program Note
Mani Ratnam’s epic drama about salvation and forgiveness shows charisma and brilliant imagery. The story begins with the long and ill-fated relationship between two theology students, Sam Fernando and Bergman. When he begins his priesthood in a small town by the sea, Sam embraces Thomas, whom had been abandoned by everyone, with love. But because of Bergman’s evil plot, Father Sam is imprisoned, while Thomas falls into a life of wicked deeds under Bergman’s influence. Thomas is, however, later able to slowly escape the world of darkness when he falls in love with Bea. In this film, Ratnam explores how far salvation and forgiveness is possible through faith. To Thomas, who has lived all his life in hate, that salvation and forgiveness is possible through ‘love’. That love is stronger than Father Sam’s faith. Thus Ratnam is able to showcase his exceptional skills in telling a story about “conflict and resolution between characters.” His long time collaborator, A.R. Rahman’s beautiful music alongside the stunning imagery perfects the film. (KIM Ji-Seok)
