Program Note
The centerpiece for this year′s Korean Panorama is a group of three films from old-time directors, each breaking a long silence. These films are welcome additions to their film careers and unique
interpretations of the 1990′s. First in order is Scent of Love, the 109th work of a master of Korean cinema, Kim Soo-Yong. He returns with a classically-themed film about the growing pains of youth.
Recently discharged Chan-Woo receives a will from an ex-acquaintance and leaves for her hometown, carrying her ashes. As he reminisces about the girl and prepares for her religious
service, he meets a mysterious innkeeper Jin-Kyung. Chan-Woo′s journey towards adulthood is a never-changing rite of passage for the days of youth. Excellent cinematography adds scenic beauty
to the romantic atmosphere. Youth and the trials of growing up are familiar topics for Kim Soo-Yong, whose previous works Fog and Splendid Outing captured modern man′s inner self and wandering
nature, Although based on an original story by Koo Hyo-Seo, the film retains the director′s touch via his unique characters. Just as Chan-Woo catches the scent of a human while walking through a
grove of old trees, Scent of Love casts a cynical eye on the precariously affluent youth of the 90′s. grove The film is not a sermon, however, just kindly advice from a master of the craft. (Kwon Yong-Min)
