Program Note
After working for 30 years in Tijuana, Rafael and Lidia are set to retire. But Rafael is suddenly ineligible for a pension due to administrative mistakes in the past and Lidia’s dedication to her disabled mistress ends in insult when her employer decides to bequeath all her property to her dog. And now the two prepare for their quiet counterattack.
This debut feature uses a static atmosphere to comically describe the prevailing problems of inequality and labor abuse in contemporary Mexico. In particular, it is interesting that the reality Mexico faces is placed as one side of the wall at the seashore in the first sequence and as the other side in the last sequence. The position of Latin Americans and the colonial master-servant relationship between white Westerners and natives often found in Latin-made films stands out all over the surface of this film. Workers has the degree of completeness to the point one cannot believe that this is the first feature by a rookie director. (RHEE Soue-won)
