Program Note
Fresh from psychiatric care, Liso is living with parents who treat him like an infant. Facing a fractured existence, only Sonia, his protective Bolivian maid, and his grandmother give Liso the strength to begin rebuilding his life. The Argentine author Santiago Loza’s seventh feature, La Paz describes how a young man with deep inner scars builds up the courage to survive. As the film starts, the camera shows a close-up of the character and during the rest of the film, the camera is turned toward his inner world. Such delicate description of the inner world is what the director executes with great skill. The master-servant relationship between a Native American and a white westerner is reflected in the narrative but not in an ordinary way. La Paz, land of indigenous people, represents natural and divine power that heals the character living with the scar of love. It is an alternative to what cannot be done with family love and human power. The director focuses on the character’s emotions and inner flow rather than on his actions, describing the invisible inner world to a natural rhythm in an outstanding manner. (RHEE Soue-won)
