Program Note
Defying age and loneliness, a 58-year-old divorcee Gloria rejoins the Santiago singles’ scene. After a series of disappointments, she meets a man at a ball and they have a great time together. She is filled with joy but her joy is soon challenged as she finds out that the man is married. What is waiting for Gloria is a repeat of hope, disappointment and despair.
Gloria, which depicts a crisis of a lively woman, is an outstanding film representing this year’s remarkable growth of Chilean film industry. The Chilean actress Paulina Garcia’s performance is amazing. In particular, in a latter scene where she desperately holds on to the indecisive man after her series of despairing disappointments, you will understand why Berlin awarded her the Silver Bear for Best Actress. By means of the woman’s mature sexuality and emotional baggage, this tragic quasi-romance deals with the fundamental loneliness of life and reaches the reflection on the existence of humans who are inevitably alone after all.
