Program Note
In 1989, Israeli soldiers are sent to Gaza to oversee the Arab population. During a routine patrol, one of them gets killed by a washing machine thrown from one of the village′s houses. Four young soldiers are then stationed on the roof top of a Palestinian family to keep a close watch on the neighborhood and find the responsible persons. The film describes the extraordinary journey of a young soldier trying to find his place in the chaos surrounding him. The director Yariv Horowitz’s personal
experience during his military service gave him an idea of making this film. It shows the reality of conflict between Israel and Palestine in the perspective of Israeli soldiers. Rock the Casbah is a serious drama about what really goes on in this troubled land as the director intended to bring the audience as close as possible to the aspect of Israel’s reality. (Dosin PAK)
