Program Note
In 1981, twenty-one Irish mothers faced the dilemma of watching their sons starve themselves to death for their political beliefs. Some Mother′s Son tells the story of two such mothers, Kathleen Quigley and Annie Higgins, ordinary women from different backgrounds, Kathleen is a windowed school teacher and a life-long pacifist who is shaken out of her comfortable existence when her son, Gerald, is arrested after a shoot-out. Gerald′s participation in a hunger strike draws Kathleen into Northern Ireland′s political conflict and into contact with Annie, a tough farmer′s wife and fervent IRA supporter.
