Program Note
A trademark of Kim Ki-Young′s career is a series of films that are variations of the same storyline. The housemaid series includes the films The Housemaid, The Woman of Fire, and The Woman of Fire′82.
Composer Dong-Shik manages a chicken farm. Their new maid Myung-Ja is fresh from the country. Jung-Soon asks Myung-Ja to watch her husband when she leaves town, but events result in Dong-Shik raping Myung-Ja, and the household turning against her. Although similar to The Housemaid, this film is distinct in its use of colors, especially in the use of stained glass. While the film lacks the social dimension of its predecessors, it is a study in the changes of a director′s cinematic language and of a filmmaker′s evolution. (Lee Yong-Kwan)
