Mohsen Makhmalbaf and his son Maysam paid a visit to Haifa, Israel where the governing authority of the Baha′i Faith was located. The Baha′i is a religion founded in Iran some 170 years ago, emphasizing peace between all humans. There are 7million Baha′i s all over the world now. There in the garden, the father and son shot each other with individual cameras, having conversations with each other. And the third camera was set to shoot both of them. Thus, the subjective view and the objective view are paralleled. Their conversations cover diverse topic of the religion, world and cinema. Sometimes, they fiercely disputed with each other to show their conflicting generation gaps. However, their cameras got over the border lines and ideologies. InThe Gardener, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, with his son Maysam, has adopted a new definition; “Cinema is a conversation.” The film is also devoted to their sacred ritual for longing desire for peace. The Makhmalbaf family, currently in exile, might take risks to deliver their message through the film. So, it is recalling the meaning of ‘courage’ as well. (KIM Ji-Seok)
