Director Chung Ji-Young recently directed another film concerned to the matter of justice, followed by <Unbowed> (2011). The film is based on the memoir written by the late Kim Geuntae, a famous politician in Korea and former Minister of Health and Welfare, who was once a young leader of pro-democracy movement during the military autocracy in Korea. Kim was imprisoned by KCIA and tortured for 22 days at a specially designed facility located at Namyoung-dong, Seoul since September of 1985. The director never focuses on Kim′s life but torture itself; how torture can destroy a human soul. In the film, some considerable part of the film is allocated to realistic torture descripition that you may feel like you′re torturing someone or being tortured. Though the main characters of the torturer and the tortured are extremely serious, the film is decorated with some comic characters to continually provide with some relaxations from the tensions, just as was <Unbowed>. It is one of the major virtues of the controversial film and of the brilliant director as well. (JEON Chanil)
