Program Note
The premise is Hitchcockian ? a train full of strangers forced to spend the night in a confined space, with a suggestion that among the passengers there might be a killer. It is fascinating to watch how Kawalerowicz mixes the elements of film genres ? suspense meets character study and over the course of film it becomes equally gripping to watch the development of relationships between the characters as it is to watch the search for the killer. The film stars the most iconic Polish actor of 1950’s and 1960’s, Zbigniew Cybulski, but the emotional centre of the story is the sad-eyed Lucyna Winnicka. (Michał CHACI?SKI)

Director
Jerzy KAWALEROWICZ
A towering figure in Polish cinema during communist times, both as director and producer. He made such classics as the Cannes-awarded <Mother Joan of the Angels> (1960), <the Oscar-nominated Pharaoh> (1965) or <the Berlin-awarded Death of a President> (1977). Notable for his intimate approach to characters even in huge historical narratives. Among the topics discussed in his greatest films were the power struggles in closed-off communities.
