Program Note
This film can be seen as the sequel to Caro Diaro that brought the best direction award to Nani Moretti at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Moretti explores present Italian society in this film as the incorporates his own voiceover reflections with with filmic records of his daily life and clips from his works dated from 1994 to 1996. The film begins with the victory of the right conservative party led by Berlusconi, a media mogul who owns three Italian TV channels, in the general elections in the month of April. This is followed by such episodes as an anxiously waiting Moretti as his wife gives birth, followed by work on a new film project. As the government party loses its power, Moretti cancels the long-awaited production for his musical film, and instead embarks on a documentary project on the current Italian society. He purchases various newspapers published in Italy to make clippings, but he films nothing but seas of umbrellas covering the crowd at the celebration of the national liberation day, April 25. An telling sequence is when Moretti visits a friend at work on a commercial film and accuses him of contributing to the commercialization of cinema. Aprile is a remarkably candid and delightful auteurist drama, with a potent mixture of humor and sincerity, that one of the best storytellers of the century brings to us. (K. Jin Yoon)
