Program Note
The mayor of an idyllic island village discovers a girl awash on their shores. He and his wife who have no children of their own, take care of her as if she were their own daughter. Soon they discover that the girl has mysterious powers to heal sick people and even to gather fish for the villagers to catch. The whole island cherishes the girl and pledges themselves to not tell anyone from the land about the girl and her special, mystic powers. But unexpected problems arise, and the residents disagree about whether the child was sent for a larger spiritual purpose. Now, once peaceful community devolves into civil war, torn over the belief that the child is the next saviour. Christian Sparkes who had a sensational feature debut with Cast No Shadow (2014) returns with another gripping mystery drama. The King Tide had its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
