Director Małgorzata Szumowska, who demonstrated her interest in the body and sexuality through works such as Elles (2011), In the Name of (2013), and Body (2015), presents a journey in her new film Woman of…, where a woman trapped within a man’s body seeks her true identity. Aniela has spent her entire life living as Andrzej, a man with a devoted wife and two childeren in a small village, appearing as an ordinary clerk. However, Andrzej’s life is brimming with secrets and lies that his devoutly Catholic parents and wife have deliberately ignored. In the introductory scene, the camera of Michał Englert, the co-director and cinematographer of the film, zooms in on Aniela’s bare feet concealed within Andrzej’s socks. Aniela’s feet take steps through the fear and misery of personal history amidst Poland’s turmoil, and at the end of the road, we discover an unexpectedly warm and tender love. (Karen PARK)
