Program Note
Moran, a bank teller, yearns to escape his monotonous life, and resolves to rob a safe. Involuntarily, his coworker Roman becomes entangled in this criminal act. In a tranquil rural village, where Roman ventures to retrieve a concealed bag of money, he encounters the enchanting sisters Norma and Morna, accompanied by their friend Ramon. As these five characters, whose names are anagrams of each other, appear, new stories unfurl. However, The Delinquents consistently defies the audience’s expectations that these stories will ultimately merge into a single conclusion in the end. Lacking the typical car chases and conspiracies often associated with heist movies, the film flows like a romantic comedy. Tracking this dreamlike and elusive film, you can uncover the charm and amusement born from incongruous collisions. Moran chooses to imprison himself to attain freedom, while Roman struggles to embrace an unexpected taste of liberation. The illusory freedom dissipates like a puff of cigarette smoke, fading away with a sip to quench the thirst. (Karen PARK)
