Program Note
The Goldman Case, based on a true story, was one of the most talked about films in Cannes since its premiere in the Directors’ Fortnight this year. Pierre Goldman is a famous French far-left activist who was accused of killing two pharmacists during a protest in 1969. Proclaiming himself innocent, he accuses the police of racist behavior and does not hide his provocative nature even in the courtroom. Director Cédric Kahn grippingly recreates the final trial in 1976 that would decide Goldman’s fate. Everyone condemns Goldman and only the defense of his lawyer Kiejman can save him from the death penalty, which makes the movie a tense courtroom thriller. Arieh Worthalter’s performance as Goldman elevates him to the level of the heroes that appear in Dostoevsky’s novels. Arthur Harari, who plays the lawyer, is the director of Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle (2021). He also co-wrote the screenplay for this year’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall. (SEO Seunghee)
