Program Note
Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor, the directors of Leviathan, head to operating rooms in hospitals with the miniature surgical cameras that can enter people’s bodies. Taking its title from the book on human anatomy written by Andreas Vesalius, the first person to dissect human body in the 16th century, the film contains the bloody scenery witnessed by the two directors in operating rooms. As they have said, now we will see what “everyone has but no one has ever seen before.” Without any warning (narration or caption), the camera freely penetrates the surface and insides of the human body, from brain to spine, veins, intestines, and even eyes. More than a few people will be shocked by the fact that such deadly dismantling/dissecting of the body is necessary for survival. And a splendid ending that visualizes Eros and Thanatos awaits.
